X-Ray image processing, grainy images help by robertkjr3d
I will post a couple of raw images (cr2). That are similar to images that we work with everyday. I cannot change the details of how these are camera acquired... meaning shutter speed... iso... so forth. There are problems. We really need to process through the grainnyness to the bone structure, and even possibly be able to see fractures.
1) Can we get the Black to White ratio to the best possible extent. (Can we see even detail in the ankle?) (Can we see fractures?)
2) What can we do with Sharpness to Grannyness ratio? I am a C# programmer, and there is currently some code that does processing. On the side I have also played with 'Rawtherapee' and dump into Gimp 2.8 with the 'Usharp Mask' not yielding any better results.
3) Hot Spotting/Glow effect in the edges... This is a problem. Is there any known filter. That can also be written in C#, or used, that will help with the glowing edges. Our clients do not like seeing the edges glow, way outside the feet.
a) Not all images we process are 'feet'. Does this still apply... maybe.
The steps I take in RawTherapee, that yields junky results... But on the right track:
1) Load CR2
2) I use the 'Contrast by detail levels' section
a) section 3 set to 2.74
b) Section 4 (coarsest) set to 3.57
c) threshold set to 0.20
3) I tried using the 'Noise Reduction', but it failed for most images. Just made them look worse.
4) Now in Gimp 2.8: Switch Mode to 'Grayscale'
5) Invert
6) Just for kicks, rotate so that the toes are pointed up...
7) Color-->Auto-->Equalize (The C# is doing this as well... Perhaps Adaptable Histogram-Equalization) But the results are questionable. Because of other artifacts in the image, its hard to know what to 'Auto-Bright' on.?! Perhaps part of the contest?
8) Now you gotta play with it some more... It still usually too bright... It will need (Contrast+)
9) Also use the (Curves tool) Pull it down a bit in the middle.
The C# software I currently have does a lot of this as well, but it looks a little different. I'm looking for someone to come up with a little magic. Or an idea of how to process these images that I haven't thought of. I actually looked into 'Gray-Level-Grouping'. But no one seems to have coded that in the world, except the creators themselves. It seems to be a pipe dream.
What is attached:
Image1 - foot (3 versions: A raw cr2, then one processed by our software, then one processed by the method above)
Image2 - foot with fracture in a toe, if you can find it, 'good'. That's not the contest. (.. same 3 versions)
Image3 - Another Cr2: just to show you that I need to deal with other types of images.
The contest is:
1) If you can find me C# code-able methods to process the images better than I'm already doing. 1) Auto-brightness methods related the the 'Equalization'/normalization/Gray-Level-grouping.
2) As mentioned above: Grannyiness vs Sharpness is always a problem! Is there any pattern to the grain. Can this be solved, in a C# codeable manner? Of course I have investigated.... Despeckle/Gaussian whatever. I'm looking for 'magic'.
One thing of note, is that I'm dealing with 14 to 16bit grayscale images. My code is generally dealing with light intensities not 8bit bitmaps. But I might be able to handle both. (Prize: 200)

Fireplace needs a new look by wishfool
